Heat vs Celtics Picks & Prediction

Boston is a unique beast when it comes to 3-point shooting. The Celtics are the most efficient team in the NBA from beyond the arc. They lead the entire league in 3-point attempts per game (42.5), and they knock them down at the second-best clip (38.8%).

However, as Wayne Gretzky once said, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” and that was clearly Miami’s mantra out of the gate against Boston. Instead of consistently working the ball inside and looking for high-percentage shots like we’re used to seeing from them, the Heat were content leaving their fate up to the basketball gods (aka 3-point variance) in the first two games of this series, which bred very mixed results, as they lost Game 1 by 20 (114-94) and won Game 2 by 10 (111-101).

However, the Heat rank 18th in 3-point attempts per game (33.7). So after rolling into Boston for the first round of the playoffs and stealing a win by jacking up a total of 80 shots from 3-point territory in the first two games of the series, the Heat decided to test the waters a little bit with their own style of play at home –  Game 3: 28 3-point attempts, Game 4: 33 3-point attempts – and Boston shut it down emphatically on both occasions, resulting in a point differential of -34 in a pair of ugly losses.

On the bright side for the Heat, it might be for the best moving forward. Miami is thoroughly outmatched in this series, especially in the absence of Jimmy Butler and Terry Rozier – and for a brief moment, after splitting the first two games on the road in Boston, the Heat tricked themselves into thinking they had enough juice to head home and win Game 3 or 4 without trying to draw an outlier result in 3-point variance on offense, and clearly that was a mistake.

Miami needs a perfect storm in order to compete against Boston game-to-game, and they got one in Game 2 as the Celtics shot just 12-of-32 from 3-point range, while the Heat drilled 23-of-43 (53.5%). But fortunately for Miami, the Celtics naturally set the stage for a perfect storm to occur by turning pretty much every game into a 3-point shootout.

The Heat shot just 18-of-61 (29.5%) from long range at home in Games 3 and 4. But on the road in Games 1 and 2, they knocked down 35-of-80 (43.7%) 3-point attempts, and Game 5 will be played in Boston, for what it’s worth.

Don’t get me wrong, this series is over – and it ended when Jimmy Butler went down with a knee sprain in the Play-In Tournament against the Sixers. However, if we know anything about the current iteration of this Heat team, it’s that they are pesky and annoying, and they never go down without a fight. They continue to win games long after it seems like the final nail has been hammered into the coffin, and at this very point in time, it seems like they may be due for another positive swing in 3-point variance after shooting 54% in Game 2, and then below 33% in Games 1, 3, and 4.
