Magic vs Cavaliers Picks & Prediction

As we enter Game 7 of this first round playoff series between the Cavaliers and Magic, the home team has won all six matchups, and most of the games haven’t been overly competitive, with the visiting team owning a combined point differential of -93 in those six contests.

The latest two meetings between these two teams, however, have easily been the tightest matchups of the series thus far. Although, neither squad managed to actually break the chain, as the Cavs escaped with a thrilling 104-103 win on their homefloor in Game 5, and then the Magic scratched and clawed their way to a 103-96 home victory in Game 6.

It may seem rather obvious to back the home team to win a 7th straight game in this series. But quite frankly, it’s the only move that makes sense barring intentional contrarian action.

It’s a very small sample size. But the Magic have been one of the most efficient scoring attacks in the league at home this postseason, ranked 4th out of 16 playoff teams in both points per game (112) and offensive rating (119.6) through three home games. However, the exact opposite has been true for them on the road, highlighted by Orlando ranking 15th in scoring (90.7) and offensive rating (94.8) in three road playoff games.

The only thing that makes me hesitant about the Cavs in this spot is their lackluster offensive metrics in general. Aside from Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland has struggled to generate offense throughout this series regardless of game location, highlighted by the Cavs ranking 14th out of 16 playoff teams in home offensive rating at 103.1, while shooting just 43% from the field and 31% from 3-point range in those three contests. But make no mistake about it, Cleveland’s subpar home offensive rating of 103.1 is still much better than Orlando’s road offensive rating of 94.3 for the series.

I’m no stranger to the idea of homecourt advantage playing a crucial role in the NBA Playoffs, especially when it comes to young teams like the Magic. However, game location seems to be playing a much bigger role than usual in this particular series, for whatever reason it may be – and because of that, I see no other choice but to lay the points with Cleveland at home in Game 7.
