76ers vs Knicks Picks & Prediction

Quite frankly, I’m sick and tired of making excuses for this Sixers team. But as the betting market currently stands, I still believe the best value in Game 5 lies with Philadelphia, even if it means going down with the ship in another frustrating loss.

There’s no excuse for the way Philly lost Game 4. The Sixers were outhustled and outplayed in nearly every facet of the game in the most recent meeting between these teams. They shot 35% from the field and 27% from 3-point range in Sunday’s contest. The intensity on defense simply wasn’t there. Jalen Brunson (47 PTS, 53% FG) got whatever he wanted for the entire game for New York. Plus, to make matters worse, the Sixers were also -6 on the offensive glass and -10 in the rebound department overall in Game 4.

Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey shot a combined 15-of-40 (38%) from the field in Sunday’s contest. Quite honestly, very few things went the Sixers’ way in the most recent meeting between these two teams. However, with all that said, the Sixers still led by seven points with less than three minutes left in the third quarter of Game 4, but they ended up choking away the lead in the final stanza by scoring just 16 points on 25% from the field and 11% from 3-point range in the final 12 minutes of the event.

It’s truly a shame the referees got in the way of the Sixers stealing Game 2 in the Big Apple. This series would be a whole lot of fun heading back to NY tied 2-2. According to the NBA Officiating Last Two Minute Report, Maxey was officially deemed to be fouled twice in the closing seconds of the Knicks’ Game 2 victory – which, in theory, should’ve given the Sixers a pair of free throws to seal the game. But instead of the series being tied, the Knicks have a 3-1 lead entering Game 5, and it’s all but over for Philadelphia already.

With that in mind though, don’t expect the Sixers to roll over and quit. According to Action Network’s Matt Moore, teams up 3-1 at home after winning Game 4 are just 30-35-1 ATS (46%) in Game 5 – and this is just the sixth time since 2003 that a team up 3-1 has been less than a 4.5-point favorite in this spot. So the oddsmakers still aren’t quite ready to sell their stock in Philly yet, and history says Game 5s in this spot are usually competitive.

In Game 1 of this series in NY, the Sixers closed the third quarter with a 3-point lead over the Knicks, and they either led or trailed by one possession for most of the final quarter before eventually falling by a final score of 111-104 down the stretch. Then in Game 2, it looked like Philly had the win in the bag before all hell broke loose in the final moments, as the Sixers extended their lead to four points with what appeared to be a dagger from Maxey with 1:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, which was followed by a defensive stop, and a trip to the free throw line for Kyle Lowry with 47 seconds left on the clock – and still managed to lose that game.

Make no mistake about it. Philadelphia isn't going to win this series. The Sixers lost this series by their own undoing, and they deserved to lose it. Poor rebounding. Bad offensive stretches. Questionable coaching decisions. You name it. But I still believe they are the more talented roster in this matchup, and they have already proven capable of hanging with the Knicks at MSG. So with their backs up against the wall in Game 5, I’m going to take one last ride with the Sixers on the first half spread on Tuesday. I’m not quite as confident in their overall ability to steal this game on the road outright, but I do expect them to battle hard early and give themselves a lead to inevitably cough up.
