Betting on the Washington Commanders

With a fresh name, the Commanders have grabbed headlines and possibly, the attention of fans and sports bettors in the DMV area.

Washington Commanders Franchise History

The Commanders’ history began in Boston in the 1930s, when the team was dubbed the Braves. The team migrated to the Washington DC area a year after its inception and changed its name from the Braves to the Redskins.

The franchise kept its name until 2020, when it announced it would ditch its name, for the Washington Football Team, due to its racist connotation toward Native Americans. After two seasons as the Football Team, Washington adopted the Commanders nickname.

After sputtering in the ‘50s and ‘60s, the then-Redskins found a spark in the early ‘70s and appeared in Super Bowl VII, where they fell to the undefeated Dolphins.

In a 10-year span from 1982-1991, the Redskins won three Super Bowls, led by head coach Joe Gibbs. Three different quarterbacks delivered those titles to Washington: Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien.

Since then, the franchise has struggled mightily. There have been flashes of greatness in Washington via Robert Griffin III and the late-great Sean Taylor, but the team has failed to keep up with its winning ways of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Betting on the Commanders in Washington DC

In Washington DC, sports betting is legal but nuanced. There are a handful of online sportsbooks, but only GambetDC, run by the DC Lottery, is available throughout the entire District.

GambetDC has received extensive backlash since launching its product in the late spring of 2020.

Part of the backlash is due to the no-bid process through which it received its license. Some cite potential corruption as a reason the sportsbook should have never been launched. The other major issue users have with GambetDC is its app.

Its app is the only one available throughout the whole city, but it is light years behind Caesars and BetMGM, two sportsbooks that operate in specific multi-block-areas of the city near their partners.

Betting on the Commanders in Maryland & Virginia

The Commanders play their games at FedEx Field in Maryland, but they train in Ashburn, Virginia. While Washington DC claims the Commanders, the team realistically belongs to the entire DMV area.

Sports betting was legalized in Maryland in 2020, and the first retail sportsbook opened in 2021. Online sports betting likely won’t make its way into the state until fall of 2022 at the earliest.

Virginia, however, offers a robust online betting market. It’s one of just a couple states to go online-only, and while retail locations are expected to pop up in the near future, online betting is where most of the money is.

At VegasInsider, we have the latest Washington Commanders odds and a ton of expert information and picks to aid you with your betting experience! Washington Commanders Sportsbook Partnerships

In 2021, the Commanders, then named the Washington Football Team, partnered with FanDuel Sportsbook in Virginia.

Because the franchise is headquartered in Virginia, it was given preference for a mobile sports betting permit and granted the opportunity to partner with an established member of the industry.
